ERROR: Invalid domain for site key on V2 reCAPTCHA happens on some domains only

Invalid site key for domain error on some of my sites. This is driving me nuts. i have several keys, each witih multiple domains attached to it. Sporadically, some of them work, others do not, and there's no pattern. It's all the same CMS so the code is identical except different keys for different users. 

What I see is the good old ERROR: Invalid domain for site key However I verified all domains are on the sitekey, double triple quadruple checked the public key and private key.
