The widget doesn't stop the form from being submitted, even if the user hasn't done anything with it. What it does is, it adds an input field to your form called g-recaptcha-response, and your server-side script needs to look for that and verify it. If you want to prevent the form from being submitted if that field is blank, then you would need to have javascript that's called when the form is submitted, that checks for g-recaptcha-response being blank and displays a message instead of submitting the form. The pictures of food and such only come up sometimes. It's kind of the point of the "no-captcha recaptcha" that (hopefully) most of the time a user will simply have to check the box, and google's magic will decide that they are likely human and don't need to do anything else. I don't see how this could have affected your email. If you didn't do anything to your server scripts and you put your html page back the way it was, then I don't see how the recaptcha stuff could have any lasting effect. Do you have a copy of the html from before you made any changes? If so, put it back and start over.
