Deleting the two cookies at /recaptcha did not fix this, neither did switching to a new chrome profile, although I have been successful in new sessions and other browsers, where I am always asked for an answer to a distorted text / address reading question. I was able to get myself into this state by opening the page with the captcha, turning off my internet connection, and then turning it back on. I have a friend that experienced the problem first and to her knowledge did not lose internet as I did.
