Help - Total PHP Ignorant - Completely Lost on Server Side Stuff

It's easy enough for me to set up the widget with just the two items pasted into my index.html page. But I know nothing of PHP, what to do with it, where it goes. Will someone be willing to hold my hand, or can point me to to a step-by-step guide on what to do? The PHP examples are total jibberish to me.
