"Could not open socket"

I have enabled ReCaptcha on my Joomla 2.5.11 site and it is set as the default Captcha in Global Configuration. After I fill out my contact form and Captcha, I hit Send and get the error "Could not open socket". I tried changing the line in recaptcha.php to: if (($fs = @fsockopen(gethostbyname($host), $port, $errno, $errstr, 10)) == false ) but I am still getting the same error.
